India and the Belgium–Luxembourg union hold their 19th Joint Economic Commission in Luxembourg
Officials from India, Belgium and Luxembourg met in Luxembourg on 29 October 2026 for the nineteenth round of their joint economic forum. They took stock of trade and investment links and talked through sectors where business ties could grow. India's Commerce Secretary also addressed senior executives of Luxembourg firms and invited them to invest in India.
Background
The India–Belgium–Luxembourg Economic Union (BLEU) Joint Economic Commission is a recurring forum for reviewing economic ties, and this was its 19th session.
Co-chairs were Shri Rajesh Agrawal (India's Commerce Secretary), Mr. Filip Vanden Bulcke (Belgium's Director-General for Geo-Economy and Economic Diplomacy) and Mr. Henri Schumacher (Secretary General in Luxembourg's foreign ministry).
The agenda covered logistics, with attention to flights and seaports, along with green energy and clean technology, finance and FinTech, digitalisation and ICT, healthcare and life sciences, Ayurveda and traditional medicine, and agro and food processing.
The three sides agreed to look at working together on aerospace, as well as on research, innovation, universities and skilling.
Trade concerns and access to each other's markets were also on the table.
Following the session, the Commerce Secretary spoke to CEOs of Luxembourg-based companies, stressing India's growth story and urging long-term investment, technology tie-ups and links with Indian firms that supply global value chains.
Why it matters for the exam
A Joint Economic Commission is a tool of economic diplomacy: it gives officials of both sides a regular channel to raise irritants and shape the agenda, complementing larger regional or bloc-level negotiations.
The range of sectors shows India seeking foreign capital and technology for manufacturing, clean energy and digital services, which ties into export competitiveness and participation in global value chains.
Placing Ayurveda, higher education and skilling next to hard economic sectors shows India using its traditional knowledge and human-resource strengths as part of economic outreach.
Discussing market access and trade concerns shows that even close partners need dialogue to clear regulatory or access barriers, and the business interaction links government talks to actual private investment.

12th BRICS Parliamentary Forum in New Delhi: parliamentary diplomacy
India's Parliament is hosting the 12th BRICS Parliamentary Forum from 26 October 2026. Before it opened, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla met the Russian delegation led by Vyacheslav Volodin, Chairman of the State Duma.
Background
The meeting took place in the context of India's BRICS Presidency in 2026, according to the Lok Sabha Secretariat's release.
The two sides spoke about cooperation against terrorism, reform of the United Nations Security Council and India's case for permanent membership, which Russia supports.
The release notes that India and Russia will complete 80 years of diplomatic relations in 2027.
The Speaker proposed regular meetings of the India-Russia Inter-Parliamentary Commission and exchanges of young and women parliamentarians.
Why it matters for the exam
Parliamentary diplomacy is a track separate from the executive's: legislatures meet as legislatures, which keeps contact going even when governments disagree.
For GS2, BRICS can be studied at three levels: summits of leaders, ministerial tracks and forums like this one of parliaments.
UNSC reform comes up in almost every bilateral meeting India holds; note who supports India's permanent membership and in which forum it was said.
