Shishya School Score (v0): how it is worked out
The Shishya School Score is a number out of 100 for each school, worked out from four official numbers that UDISE+ (Ministry of Education) publishes for every school in India. It is Shishya's own score, not an official or government ranking. The score itself is a fixed formula: the same for every school, written down below, and no AI writes or changes any number. Schools are compared only with schools of the same level in the same district.
For parents. Free, no sign-in, nothing to fill in: this page collects no data about you or your child. We do not take money from schools, sell places in any list or pass your details to anyone. No one can sell you a school seat: admissions go through the school or the official portal only.
The four signals and their weights
| Signal | Weight | From (UDISE fields) | Points |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pupil-teacher ratioFewer students per teacher means more time for each child. The RTE Act sets 30:1 for Classes 1-5 and 35:1 for Classes 6-8. | 40 | class_with_pre_primary_students ÷ total_teachers | 10 or fewer students per teacher = 100 points; 60 or more = 0; straight line in between (30, the RTE Act norm for Classes 1-5, = 60 points). |
| Teachers per class taughtA school with fewer teachers than classes has to combine classes (multi-grade teaching). | 25 | total_teachers ÷ number of classes taught (class_from to class_to, Classes 1-12) | One teacher or more for every class taught = 100 points; fewer in proportion (half a teacher per class = 50). |
| Students per classroomCrowded classrooms make teaching and learning harder. | 20 | class_with_pre_primary_students ÷ class_rooms | 20 or fewer students per classroom = 100 points; 80 or more = 0; straight line in between (40 = about 67 points). |
| Classrooms per class taughtWhen there are fewer rooms than classes, classes share a room or sit outside. | 15 | class_rooms ÷ number of classes taught | One classroom or more for every class taught = 100 points; fewer in proportion. |

Score = the weighted average of the points of the signals that have data. Example: a primary school with 120 students, 4 teachers, 5 classrooms and Classes 1 to 5 has a pupil-teacher ratio of 30 (60 points), 0.8 teachers per class (80 points), 24 students per classroom (about 93 points) and 1 classroom per class (100 points): (60×40 + 80×25 + 93.3×20 + 100×15) ÷ 100 = 77.7.
Who is compared with whom
- Primary schools (highest class 1 to 5), within the same district
- Schools up to Class 8 (highest class 6 to 8), within the same district
- Schools up to Class 10 (highest class 9 or 10), within the same district
- Schools up to Class 12 (highest class 11 or 12), within the same district
Rules
- The same formula for every school. It reads only four official UDISE numbers: students, teachers, classrooms and the classes taught.
- A school is ranked only against schools of the same level in the same district (primary schools, schools up to class 8, schools up to class 10, schools up to class 12). Never across districts or states.
- Completeness rule: a school is ranked only when signals carrying at least 70% of the weight have data. A missing number is left out and the rest re-weighted to 100; it never lowers a score. Below 70%: "Not enough public data to rank".
- A count of zero (for example 0 teachers) is treated as missing data, not as a bad value.
- Nursery, play and pre-primary-only schools are never ranked.
- Schools with fewer than 20 students, schools UDISE does not list as operational, and district groups with fewer than 5 scored schools are not ranked.
- Equal scores share a rank (1, 2, 2, 4). The score is rounded to one decimal before ranking.
- Fees are shown on school pages where an official order exists, but they are never part of the score. No school can pay to be listed, scored or moved.
Bands are shown first and the exact rank second: Top 10%, 10% to 25%, 25% to 50% and 50% to 100% of the ranked schools of that level in the district. Small differences in score do not mean much; read the four numbers on the school page.
What the score does NOT measure
- Teaching quality, or how well children learn
- Board exam results (not yet in our data; results also reflect which children a school admits)
- Safety, buildings, toilets, drinking water, fire safety or child protection
- Facilities such as libraries, labs, computers, internet or playgrounds (not in the file we use)
- Teachers' qualifications or training
- Fees, value for money, or what parents and children think of the school
So a high score does not mean a school teaches well, and a low score does not mean it teaches badly. Visit the school, ask other parents, and check its official report card before you decide.

- Data year: about 2019-20. This is Shishya's estimate; the publisher of the school-by-school file does not state the year. Numbers may have changed since then.
- Method v0 fixed on 2026-10-21. A change to any weight or rule gets a new version number, and this page will say what changed.
Corrections and replies
Found a mistake, or are you from a school? Email corp@surgesoftware.co.in with the school's UDISE code, what is wrong and a link to the official record. We reply within 7 days. If our copy of the data is wrong we fix it; if the official UDISE+ record is wrong, the school corrects it through its block education office and we pick up the change.
A school is never scored low because data is missing: below 70% of the weight it is shown as “Not enough public data to rank”.
