Computer Basics forms the foundation of the Computer Knowledge section in MPESB Group 1/2/3 exams. Questions typically test your understanding of computer generations, the distinction between hardware and software, input-output devices, and types of computers. This is a scoring area because concepts are straightforward.
Key ideas
- Computer Definition: An electronic device that accepts data (input), processes it according to instructions (program), and produces meaningful results (output). It follows the IPO cycle—Input, Process, Output.
- Hardware vs Software: Hardware is the physical, tangible part you can touch (keyboard, monitor, CPU). Software is the set of instructions that tells hardware what to do—you cannot physically touch software.
- Central Processing Unit (CPU): Called the "brain" of the computer, it has three parts—ALU (Arithmetic Logic Unit) for calculations, CU (Control Unit) for coordination, and Registers for temporary storage.
- Memory Hierarchy: Primary memory (RAM, ROM) is fast but limited; Secondary memory (hard disk, SSD, pen drive) is slower but provides permanent, large-capacity storage.
- Input Devices vs Output Devices: Input devices send data TO the computer (keyboard, mouse, scanner). Output devices receive data FROM the computer (monitor, printer, speaker).
Watch out for
- Confusing RAM and ROM: Students mix up their properties. Fix: RAM = "Random Access" means any location can be read or written directly (read-write, volatile). ROM = "Read Only" suggests permanent storage.
- Mixing up generations: Confusing transistors (2nd gen) with ICs (3rd gen). Fix: Remember sequence T-I-M: Transistors → ICs → Microprocessors for generations 2, 3, 4.
- Calling the cabinet the CPU: Some call the whole system unit (cabinet) the CPU. Fix: CPU is contained within the processor chip; it includes ALU, CU, and registers as functional units.
Quick reference
- IPO Cycle: Input → Process → Output (fundamental computer operation)
- CPU Components: ALU + CU + Registers = Brain of computer
- Generation Tech Order: Vacuum Tubes → Transistors → ICs → Microprocessors → AI/ULSI
- RAM = Volatile + Read-Write; ROM = Non-volatile + Read-Only
- India's Supercomputer: PARAM series by C-DAC, Pune
