How to prepare (with or without coaching)
The J&K Teacher Eligibility Test is highly achievable through self-study if you follow a structured approach. Coaching is absolutely not mandatory for JKTET, especially since the syllabus is well-defined and resources are available freely.
Self-study path (the practical route most successful candidates take):
Start with Shishya's free resources as your foundation. Access their JKTET previous year questions (PYQs) to understand the exact pattern and difficulty level — this is critical because many questions repeat in modified forms. Use Shishya's free mock tests religiously; they simulate the actual exam environment and help you build speed and accuracy, which is essential for 150 questions in 150 minutes.
For Child Development and Pedagogy (CDP), download NCERT books on 'Learning and Pedagogy' and focus on theories by Piaget, Vygotsky, Kohlberg, and Bruner. This section is scoring if you understand concepts rather than rote-learning. Shishya's notes typically condense these theories into exam-relevant formats. Practice MCQs daily because CDP questions test application, not just theory.
For Language sections (both Language I and II), your choice of language matters. Pick languages you're genuinely comfortable with. For English, focus on basic grammar (tenses, voice, narration), unseen passages, and pedagogy of language teaching. NCERT English textbooks (Class 6-8 for Paper I, Class 6-10 for Paper II) are sufficient. Practice comprehension passages daily — read English newspapers or simple articles for 15-20 minutes. For Hindi/Urdu/Kashmiri/Dogri, follow the same approach: grammar basics, comprehension, and language pedagogy.
For Mathematics (Paper I covers Class I-V level, Paper II covers Class VI-VIII level), revise NCERT Maths textbooks thoroughly. Focus on fundamentals: number systems, fractions, decimals, basic geometry, mensuration, data handling, and algebra. Don't just solve; understand the pedagogical approach — how would you teach this to children? Many questions ask about teaching methodologies for mathematical concepts.
For Environmental Studies (Paper I), NCERT EVS textbooks (Class III-V) are your bible. Cover themes like family, food, water, shelter, travel, and the pedagogical aspects of integrated teaching. Questions often come directly from NCERT examples and case studies.
For Mathematics and Science (Paper II), use NCERT books for Class VI-VIII. In Science, focus on physics (motion, force, light, sound), chemistry (materials, elements, acids-bases), biology (living organisms, body systems, reproduction), and their teaching methodologies. In Maths, cover rational numbers, algebra, geometry, mensuration thoroughly.
If you choose coaching: Local coaching centers in Srinagar, Jammu, and other district headquarters offer JKTET courses for ₹5,000-15,000. They mainly provide structure and peer motivation, but don't offer anything you can't access through disciplined self-study. Online platforms like Unacademy and YouTube channels dedicated to JKTET provide free video lectures.
