Sandhi and Samas (संधि और समास)
Overview
Sandhi and Samas are two fundamental concepts in Hindi grammar that test a student's understanding of how words combine and form compound structures. Mastering them not only helps in direct questions but also improves overall comprehension of Hindi vocabulary and sentence construction.
Sandhi deals with the joining of two sounds (varnas) where the end of one word merges with the beginning of another, creating a new combined form. Samas deals with the joining of two or more words to form a compound word, where the relationship between the words determines the type of compound. While Sandhi focuses on sound changes at junctions, Samas focuses on meaning relationships between combined words.
For exam success, students must memorize the rules for different Sandhi types and learn to identify Samas categories based on which component word dominates or how the compound should be expanded (vigraha).
Key Concepts
Sandhi (संधि)
- Sandhi means "joining" — when two varnas (letters/sounds) come together, one or both may change to create a smoother combined form.
- Sandhi occurs at the junction of the last letter of the first word and the first letter of the second word.
- Three main types based on the type of varnas involved: Swar Sandhi (vowels), Vyanjan Sandhi (consonants), and Visarg Sandhi (visarg ः).
- Sandhi-vichchhed means breaking the combined word back into its original components.
Samas (समास)
- Samas means "compound" — two or more words combine to form a single meaningful word, dropping the vibhakti (case markers) in between.
- The expanded form showing the relationship is called Samas-vigraha.
- Classification depends on which word (purva-pad or uttar-pad) is dominant or whether both are equal.
- Six main types: Avyayibhav, Tatpurush, Karmadharaya, Dvigu, Dvandva, and Bahuvrihi.

Worked Examples
Example 1: Sandhi-Vichchhed
Question: "सूर्योदय" का संधि-विच्छेद कीजिए।
Solution:
- Identify the junction: सूर्य + उदय
- Check: य comes before उ
- This is Gun Sandhi: अ (last matra of सूर्य) + उ = ओ
- Answer: सूर्य + उदय (Gun Sandhi)
Example 2: Identify Samas Type
Question: "पंचवटी" में कौन-सा समास है?
Solution:
- Vigraha: पाँच वटों का समूह
- First word is a number (पंच = 5)
- Number-based compound = Dvigu Samas
- Answer: द्विगु समास
Example 3: Sandhi Formation
Question: "महा + ऋषि" की संधि करें।
Solution:
- आ + ऋ junction
- Rule: अ/आ + ऋ = अर् (Gun Sandhi)
- Formation: महा + ऋषि = महर्षि
- Answer: महर्षि (Gun Sandhi)
Example 4: Samas Vigraha
Question: "नीलकंठ" का समास-विग्रह करें और समास का नाम बताएं।
Solution:
- Literal vigraha: नीला कंठ → This would be Karmadharaya
- But the word refers to Lord Shiva (who has a blue throat)
- Since meaning points to a third entity, it is Bahuvrihi
- Answer: नीला है कंठ जिसका (शिव) — बहुव्रीहि समास
Common Mistakes
Mistake 1: Confusing Karmadharaya and Bahuvrihi
- Wrong: "लंबोदर" = लंबा उदर (Karmadharaya)
- Correct: "लंबोदर" = लंबा है उदर जिसका (गणेश) — Bahuvrihi, because the word refers to Ganesha, not just a long belly.
Mistake 2: Mixing up Gun and Vriddhi Sandhi
- Wrong: Thinking अ + ए = ए (Gun)
- Correct: अ + ए = ऐ (Vriddhi); Gun Sandhi involves इ/ई or उ/ऊ, not ए/ऐ/ओ/औ.
Mistake 3: Forgetting Nañ Tatpurush
- Wrong: Classifying "अनपढ़" as Avyayibhav because "अन्" seems like a prefix
- Correct: "अनपढ़" = न पढ़ा हुआ — Nañ Tatpurush (negation compound)
Mistake 4: Ignoring context in Samas identification
- Wrong: Automatically picking Tatpurush for any "X का Y" vigraha
- Correct: Check if the compound refers to a third entity; if yes, it is Bahuvrihi regardless of vigraha structure.
Mistake 5: Incorrect Deergh Sandhi application
- Wrong: इ + इ = इ (no change)
- Correct: इ + इ = ई (short + short = long of same type)
Quick Reference
- Swar Sandhi = vowel + vowel; Vyanjan Sandhi = consonant involved; Visarg Sandhi = ः involved.
- Gun Sandhi formula: अ/आ + इ/ई = ए | अ/आ + उ/ऊ = ओ | अ/आ + ऋ = अर्
- Avyayibhav = first word is avyay (यथा, प्रति, आ); whole compound becomes adverb.
- Bahuvrihi test: Does the compound point to someone/something else? If yes → Bahuvrihi.
- Dvigu always has a number as first word and indicates a collection/group.
- Dvandva uses "और" in vigraha; both words have equal importance.
