Hindi Vyakaran (Hindi Grammar)
Overview
Hindi Vyakaran forms a foundational component of the HSSC CET language section. Questions typically test your ability to identify parts of speech (संज्ञा, सर्वनाम, विशेषण, क्रिया), recognize correct usage of tenses (काल), and understand case relationships (कारक). These concepts appear both as direct identification questions and within error-spotting or fill-in-the-blank formats.
Mastering Hindi grammar is essential because it underlies all other Hindi language skills tested in the exam—vocabulary, comprehension, and sentence correction. Most candidates struggle not because the concepts are difficult, but because they confuse similar categories or forget the marker words (परसर्ग/विभक्ति चिह्न). A systematic understanding of the six core topics—Sangya, Sarvanaam, Visheshan, Kriya, Kaal, and Karak—will help you answer 8–12 questions quickly and accurately.
Key Concepts
- संज्ञा (Noun) is the naming word for persons, places, things, qualities, or ideas. It has five types: व्यक्तिवाचक, जातिवाचक, भाववाचक, समूहवाचक, and द्रव्यवाचक.
- सर्वनाम (Pronoun) replaces a noun to avoid repetition. The six types are: पुरुषवाचक (मैं, तुम, वह), निश्चयवाचक (यह, वह), अनिश्चयवाचक (कोई, कुछ), प्रश्नवाचक (कौन, क्या), संबंधवाचक (जो, सो), and निजवाचक (आप, अपना).
- विशेषण (Adjective) qualifies a noun or pronoun. Four main types: गुणवाचक (अच्छा, बुरा), संख्यावाचक (दो, तीन), परिमाणवाचक (थोड़ा, बहुत), and सार्वनामिक (यह, वह when used before nouns).
- क्रिया (Verb) denotes action or state. Classified as सकर्मक (transitive—needs an object) and अकर्मक (intransitive—complete without object). The base form is called धातु.
- काल (Tense) indicates time of action: भूतकाल (past), वर्तमानकाल (present), and भविष्यत्काल (future). Each has six sub-types based on aspect.
- कारक (Case) shows the relationship of nouns/pronouns to the verb. Eight कारक exist, each marked by a specific विभक्ति चिह्न (postposition).
- विभक्ति चिह्न (Case Markers) are the postpositions (ने, को, से, के लिए, etc.) that identify which कारक is being used.

- उत्तम पुरुष (first person): मैं, हम
- मध्यम पुरुष (second person): तू, तुम, आप
- अन्य पुरुष (third person): वह, वे, यह, ये
Worked Examples
Example 1: Identify the संज्ञा and its type
"ईमानदारी सबसे अच्छी नीति है।"
Solution:
- ईमानदारी → भाववाचक संज्ञा (abstract quality of being honest)
- नीति → जातिवाचक संज्ञा (common noun—policy)
Example 2: Identify the कारक
"राम ने श्याम को किताब दी।"
Solution:
- राम ने → कर्ता कारक (doer, marked by "ने")
- श्याम को → संप्रदान कारक (recipient—"किसके लिए दी?" = श्याम के लिए)
- किताब → कर्म कारक (object of action, no marker here)
Example 3: Identify the काल
"वह खाना खा रहा था।"
Solution:
- "रहा था" indicates continuous action in the past
- This is अपूर्ण भूतकाल (Past Continuous)
Example 4: Classify the विशेषण
"तीन लाल सेब मेज पर रखे हैं।"
Solution:
- तीन → संख्यावाचक विशेषण (numeral adjective)
- लाल → गुणवाचक विशेषण (quality adjective)
Common Mistakes
- Confusing कर्म and संप्रदान कारक → Both use "को" but संप्रदान indicates "for whom" (recipient of benefit), while कर्म indicates direct object. Ask: "किसके लिए?" for संप्रदान vs. "किसे?" for कर्म.
- Forgetting "ने" is NOT always present with कर्ता → "ने" appears only in past tense with transitive verbs. In "राम जाता है," राम is still कर्ता without any marker.
- Mixing करण and अपादान कारक → Both use "से" but करण means "by means of" (instrument) while अपादान means "separation from." "कलम से लिखा" = करण; "पेड़ से गिरा" = अपादान.
- Confusing भाववाचक with जातिवाचक संज्ञा → Abstract nouns (भाववाचक) cannot be touched or counted: बचपन, मिठास. If you can count it, it's likely जातिवाचक.
- Misidentifying tense due to auxiliary verbs → Focus on the complete verb phrase. "खा चुका था" is पूर्ण भूतकाल, not सामान्य भूतकाल.
Quick Reference
- विशेषण always comes before the noun it modifies → "सुंदर फूल" not "फूल सुंदर" in attributive use
