International Current Events
Overview
International Current Events is a high-scoring section in HSSC CET that tests your awareness of major global happenings, summits, treaties, and India's role in international affairs. Questions typically focus on summit host cities, member countries, key agreements signed, and India-specific outcomes from multilateral forums.
Since current affairs are time-sensitive, focus on events from the past 12-18 months while maintaining a solid foundation of recurring summits and permanent international bodies. The key is knowing the "what, where, when, and who" of major events rather than deep policy analysis.
Mastering this section requires systematic tracking of G20, BRICS, SCO, QUAD, ASEAN, UN summits, and bilateral treaties India signs with other nations. Pay special attention to summits hosted by India, as these are exam favourites.
Key Concepts
- G20 (Group of Twenty): Forum of 19 countries plus EU and African Union; India hosted the 2023 summit in New Delhi where African Union became a permanent member. Presidency rotates annually.
- BRICS: Originally Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa. Expanded in 2024 to include Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, UAE, and Saudi Arabia (though Saudi participation pending). Focus on de-dollarization and New Development Bank.
- SCO (Shanghai Cooperation Organisation): Eight members including India and Pakistan (both joined 2017). Focus areas: security, counter-terrorism, economic cooperation. Iran became the 9th member in 2023.
- QUAD (Quadrilateral Security Dialogue): Informal strategic forum of India, USA, Japan, Australia. Not a military alliance but focuses on Free and Open Indo-Pacific. Annual summits since 2021.
- ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations): Ten Southeast Asian nations; India is a Dialogue Partner since 1996 and Summit-level partner since 2002. India-ASEAN summits held annually.
- COP (Conference of Parties): Annual UN climate summit. COP28 held in Dubai (UAE) in 2023; COP29 in Baku (Azerbaijan) in 2024. Focus on climate finance, loss and damage fund.

Common Mistakes
- Confusing G20 with G7: G7 is USA, UK, France, Germany, Italy, Canada, Japan (all developed economies). G20 is broader and includes India, China, Brazil. → Remember: G7 = rich nations; G20 = G7 plus major emerging economies.
- Thinking QUAD is a military alliance: QUAD has no mutual defence treaty like NATO. It's a strategic dialogue. → Correct understanding: QUAD focuses on maritime security, vaccines, technology, climate — not military obligations.
- Mixing up BRICS and SCO membership: Pakistan is in SCO but not in BRICS. → Use mnemonic: SCO has "Stan" countries (Pakistan, Kazakhstan, etc.); BRICS was originally about emerging market economies.
- Wrong headquarters locations: Students often confuse UN (New York) with WHO/WTO (Geneva). → Group them: New York = UN, UNICEF; Geneva = WHO, WTO, ILO, UNHCR; Washington = IMF, World Bank.
- Forgetting India's specific role: Questions often ask India's position in summits. → Always note: When did India join? Has India hosted? What is India's stand/commitment?
