Haryana is one of India's most agriculturally productive states, often called the "Food Bowl of India" alongside Punjab. Despite occupying only 1.34% of India's geographical area, Haryana contributes significantly to the national food grain reserves, particularly wheat and rice procured through the Food Corporation of India.
Key ideas
- Wheat is Haryana's principal crop, occupying the largest cultivated area. Haryana is one of India's leading wheat-producing states (the top three in 2023-24 were Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Punjab), with major production in Karnal, Kurukshetra, Kaithal, and Jind districts.
- Paddy (rice) is the second major crop, grown primarily during the Kharif season. Karnal district is known as the "Rice Bowl of Haryana." Basmati rice from Karnal has geographical indication (GI) recognition.
- Mustard is the primary oilseed crop, with Haryana being a leading producer. Mahendragarh, Rewari, and Bhiwani districts are major mustard-growing areas.
- Green Revolution transformed Haryana's agriculture in the late 1960s through high-yielding variety (HYV) seeds, chemical fertilisers, pesticides, and assured irrigation—turning the state from food deficit to food surplus.
- Canal irrigation dominates, with the Western Yamuna Canal (oldest canal system: first dug under Firoz Shah Tughlaq in the 14th century and restored by the British from 1817) and Bhakra Canal System being the primary sources. Tubewells supplement canal irrigation in many areas.
Watch out for
- Confusing Karnal with Kurukshetra → Karnal is the "Rice Bowl" and hosts NDRI; Kurukshetra is known for historical/religious significance and also grows wheat and rice but is not called Rice Bowl.
- Thinking Punjab's Bhakra Dam doesn't benefit Haryana → The Bhakra Main Line and Bhakra Canal System extensively irrigate Haryana's northern and central districts. Haryana shares Bhakra-Nangal benefits as a partner state.
- Assuming Haryana is water-rich due to high irrigation → Over 60% of irrigation now depends on groundwater (tubewells), and the water table is falling rapidly. This is a major concern, not a sign of abundance.
Quick reference
- Largest crop by area: Wheat (Rabi) → Paddy (Kharif)
- Rice Bowl of Haryana: Karnal district
- Murrah buffalo origin: Rohtak-Hisar belt
- State dairy brand: Vita (by HDDCF)
- Key irrigation: Western Yamuna Canal + Bhakra Canal System
