History is part of the General Awareness section in HSSC CET. Questions typically cover the chronological sweep of Indian civilisation—from the Indus Valley settlements through the freedom struggle. The exam tests factual recall: dates, personalities, battles, treaties, and the sequence of major events.
Key ideas
- Periodisation of Indian History: Ancient (up to 1206 CE), Medieval (1206–1757 CE), Modern (1757 onwards). These cut-off dates mark the Delhi Sultanate's establishment and the Battle of Plassey respectively.
- Indus Valley Civilisation (c. 2600–1900 BCE): Urban, bronze-age culture with planned cities (Harappa, Mohenjo-Daro), advanced drainage, and no deciphered script. No iron, no horses, no temples found.
- Vedic Age (c. 1500–600 BCE): Aryans, Rigvedic pastoralism shifting to Later Vedic agriculture; varna system's origin; Sabha and Samiti as assemblies.
- Mauryan Empire (322–185 BCE): First pan-Indian empire; Chandragupta founded it, Ashoka transformed it through Dhamma after Kalinga War.
- Gupta Empire (c. 320–550 CE): "Golden Age" of art, literature (Kalidasa), science (Aryabhata), and temple architecture.
Watch out for
- Confusing the three Panipat battles: Students mix up who fought whom. Fix: Remember 1526 (Babur vs Lodi), 1556 (Akbar/Bairam Khan vs Hemu), 1761 (Abdali vs Marathas).
- Mixing Maurya and Gupta achievements: Ashoka's pillars belong to Mauryas; Nalanda and Kalidasa belong to Guptas. Fix: Associate Mauryas with Pataliputra-centred administration and Buddhism spread; Guptas with cultural "Golden Age."
- Wrong dates for 1857 Revolt leaders: Mangal Pandey's hanging (8 April 1857) preceded the Meerut outbreak (10 May 1857). Fix: Pandey's act was the spark; Meerut was the explosion.
Quick reference
- Indus Valley: Harappa 1921, Mohenjo-Daro 1922 — no iron, no horse, Great Bath.
- Mauryas: Chandragupta → Bindusara → Ashoka; capital Pataliputra.
- Gupta Golden Age: Chandragupta I (320 CE), Samudragupta, Chandragupta II (Vikramaditya).
- Delhi Sultanate sequence: Slave → Khalji → Tughlaq → Sayyid → Lodi.
- Mughal sequence: Babur → Humayun → Akbar → Jahangir → Shah Jahan → Aurangzeb.
