Windows Operating System is a fundamental topic for HSSC CET Computer Knowledge section. Microsoft Windows is the most widely used operating system for personal computers, and questions typically test your familiarity with its graphical interface, file management operations, and built-in system tools.
Key ideas
- Operating System (OS): System software that manages computer hardware, software resources, and provides common services for application programs. Windows is a GUI-based OS developed by Microsoft.
- Desktop: The main screen after Windows starts. Contains icons (shortcuts to programs/files), wallpaper (background image), and the Taskbar at the bottom.
- Taskbar: Horizontal bar at screen bottom containing Start button, Search bar, pinned apps, system tray (notification area), and clock. Shows all open applications.
- Start Menu: Accessed by clicking Start button or pressing Windows key. Contains list of installed programs, power options, settings, and user account options.
- File Explorer (Windows Explorer): Application to browse, manage, and organize files and folders. Access via folder icon on Taskbar or Windows + E shortcut.
Watch out for
- Confusing Cut and Copy: Cut (Ctrl + X) removes file from original location after pasting; Copy (Ctrl + C) keeps the original intact. Students mix these up in questions about moving versus copying files.
- Thinking Recycle Bin deletion is permanent: Files deleted normally go to Recycle Bin first. Only Shift + Delete bypasses Recycle Bin for permanent deletion.
- Mixing up File Explorer and Internet Explorer: File Explorer manages local files/folders (folder icon). Internet Explorer was a web browser (blue "e" icon, now replaced by Edge). Different purposes entirely.
Quick reference
- Windows + E → Open File Explorer
- Windows + D → Show Desktop (minimize all windows)
- Ctrl + Shift + Esc → Open Task Manager directly
- Alt + F4 → Close active window/program
- F2 → Rename selected file/folder
