How to crack GATE CSE 2026 — with or without coaching

Self-study is absolutely viable for GATE CSE — many toppers clear it without coaching. The key is discipline and the right resources.
Core resources (free/affordable):
GATE PYQs (last 15-20 years): Your Bible. Download free from official GATE website or use Shishya's PYQ section with solutions. Solve every question, understand every concept behind it.
Standard textbooks: Not optional. For each subject, one good book is enough. Use local libraries, second-hand shops, or PDFs (ethically sourced). Key books: Cormen for Algorithms, Galvin for OS, Tanenbaum for Networks, Navathe for DBMS, Ullman for Automata.
Shishya's free mocks and topic tests: Crucial for exam temperament. Take at least 20-25 full-length mocks in the final 3 months. Analyze every mock thoroughly — don't just note the score.

Is it tough? An honest take for an average student
Yes, it's tough — but not insurmountable. GATE CSE is one of the more challenging papers in GATE, but thousands of average students crack it every year.
The difficulty factors:
1. Vast syllabus: 10 major subjects, each substantial. You can't afford to skip subjects entirely (unlike some exams). Even low-weightage subjects can make the difference between AIR 500 and AIR 5000.
2. Depth of questions: Not just MCQs anymore. Numerical Answer Type (NAT) questions require precise answers, no negative marking but no guessing either. Questions test conceptual clarity, not rote memory.
3. Tricky aptitude section: 15 marks of General Aptitude is the great leveler. Many engineering toppers stumble here. Don't underestimate it.
4. Competition: 1.5-2 lakh candidates for CSE. For top IITs (cutoff ~65-70/100), you need to outperform 99%+ candidates. For decent NITs or PSUs, 40-45/100 is workable.
5. Negative marking: -1/3 for 1-mark MCQs, -2/3 for 2-mark MCQs. Aggressive guessing will sink you.
What makes it manageable:
PYQs repeat patterns: 60-70% of concepts are recycled. If you've solved 15 years' PYQs thoroughly, you've seen 70% of what you'll face.
No obscure topics: Unlike some exams, GATE doesn't ask random esoteric stuff. Stick to standard textbooks and official syllabus.
Scoring is relative: You don't need 90/100. A score of 50-55 gets you into many good M.Tech programs. 60+ opens IITs.
Partial attempts work: NAT questions have no negative. Even if you solve 50-60 questions confidently out of 65, you're in a good zone.
For an "average" student (60-70% in graduation):
With 8 months of sincere prep (4 hours daily), scoring 45-55/100 is realistic
This gets you decent NITs, newer IITs, or PSU shortlists
For top 1000 rank (needed for IISc, top IITs), you need exceptional prep or strong fundamentals — doable but requires 6-8 months of intense focus
Time management is the real killer: 180 minutes for 65 questions is tight. Many capable students score less not because they don't know, but because they couldn't attempt enough. Mocks are non-negotiable to build speed.
Honest advice: If you're average in programming and struggled with subjects like Automata or Algorithms, allocate 10 months. If you were good in core CS subjects during graduation, 6 months can suffice. Consistency matters more than brilliance.

Path 1: Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs)
