How to prepare (with or without coaching)
The AP Assistant Motor Vehicle Inspector exam is domain-specific—you need strong fundamentals in automobile engineering alongside general studies. Coaching can help with automobile technical subjects, but self-study is entirely viable if you're systematic.
Without coaching (recommended self-study path):
Start with Shishya's free resources—they provide PYQs (previous year questions), subject-wise notes, and free mock tests that mirror the actual exam pattern. Download all available AP AMVI PYQs and analyze them first; this exam repeats concepts and question styles. For automobile subjects (IC Engines, Transmission, Chassis systems), use your engineering textbooks if you have a mechanical/automobile background. If not, get Kirpal Singh's "Automobile Engineering" (Volumes 1 & 2)—covers everything from basics to advanced drivetrain and brake systems. Supplement with free YouTube channels like "Skill-Lync" and "ENGINEERING MADE EASY" for visual understanding of engine cycles, transmission mechanisms, and suspension geometry.
For general studies: Use free PDFs and government websites. History (India & AP)—NCERT Class 6-12 (Old) for Indian history, AP State Portal's history section for regional content. Geography—NCERT 6-12 + Atlas, plus AP government's geography resources. Polity—M. Laxmikanth (borrow from library or use free PDFs available online) + Constitution of India (free Government of India PDF). Economy—Ramesh Singh or free Mrunal economy notes. General Science—Lucent's GS (widely available) or NCERT 6-10 science. Current Affairs—daily read The Hindu newspaper (student discounts available) or free apps like Jagran Josh, GradeUp.
Shishya's free mock tests are non-negotiable—take at least 15-20 full-length mocks in the last two months. They expose you to time pressure and highlight weak areas. Review every mock: note down mistakes, revisit those topics immediately.
With coaching:
Coaching centers in Vijayawada, Guntur, or Hyderabad (like Paramount, Sri Chaitanya) offer AP AMVI batches. Benefits: structured automobile engineering modules, regional focus on AP history/geography, peer competition. Cost ranges ₹15,000-30,000. If you opt for coaching, still use Shishya's mocks and PYQs as your benchmark—coaching material can be generic, but Shishya's questions reflect actual exam patterns.
Key strategy: The automobile section (roughly 35-40% weightage) is your differentiator. Most general-studies aspirants struggle here, so if you master IC engines (thermodynamic cycles, fuel systems, combustion), transmission types (manual, automatic, CVT), and braking systems (ABS, hydraulic principles), you leapfrog the competition. Make flashcards for technical terms and diagrams—sketch valve timing diagrams, differential mechanisms, suspension types repeatedly until they're reflexive.
