Visual Reasoning
Overview
Visual Reasoning tests your ability to mentally manipulate images and visualize spatial transformations. The three main types—mirror image, water image, and paper folding—follow consistent rules that, once mastered, make these questions some of the easiest marks in the aptitude section.
Students who struggle here usually overthink or lack a systematic approach. The key is understanding the transformation rules and applying them mechanically. With practice, you should solve each question in under 30 seconds. These questions reward spatial awareness and careful observation of letter/number orientation, not mathematical ability.
Key Concepts
- Mirror Image (Lateral Inversion): The reflection appears as if a mirror is placed to the right or left of the object. Left becomes right and vice versa, but top and bottom remain unchanged.
- Water Image (Vertical Inversion): The reflection appears as if the object is reflected in water below it. Top becomes bottom and vice versa, but left and right remain unchanged.
- Paper Folding: A paper is folded one or more times, holes are punched, and you must visualize how the holes appear when unfolded. Each fold doubles the holes symmetrically.
- Symmetrical letters/numbers: Some characters look the same after transformation (A, H, I, M, O, T, U, V, W, X, Y, 8, 0). Recognize these to save time.
- Asymmetrical elements flip direction: Letters like B, C, D, E, F, G, J, K, L, N, P, Q, R, S, Z and numbers 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 9 change orientation in reflections.
- Clock rule for mirror image: In a mirror image, clock hands pointing right will point left. Time shown as 3:00 appears as 9:00.
- Fold sequence matters: In paper folding, unfold in reverse order of folding. Holes multiply with each unfold.
Formulas / Key Facts
| Transformation | What Changes | What Stays Same |
|---|---|---|
| Mirror Image | Left ↔ Right | Top, Bottom |
| Water Image | Top ↔ Bottom | Left, Right |
Mirror Image of Time: If clock shows time T, mirror shows (12:00 - T) or (11:60 - T)
- Example: 2:30 in mirror → 12:00 - 2:30 = 9:30
Paper Folding Hole Count: If paper is folded n times and p holes are punched, total holes when unfolded = p × 2ⁿ
Quick Letter Check:
- Mirror-symmetric letters: A, H, I, M, O, T, U, V, W, X, Y
- Water-symmetric letters: B, C, D, E, H, I, K, O, X
- Both-way symmetric: H, I, O, X
Worked Examples
Example 1: Mirror Image of Word
Question: Find the mirror image of "TORTURE"
Solution:
- Mirror is placed to the right of the word
- Letters reverse in sequence: E-R-U-T-R-O-T
- Each letter flips horizontally
- T → T (symmetric), O → O (symmetric), R → Я, U → U (symmetric), E → Ǝ
Answer: ƎЯUTЯOT (written right to left, each asymmetric letter reversed)
In MCQs, look for the option where the word reads backward and asymmetric letters are flipped.
Example 2: Water Image of Figure
Question: A figure shows an arrow pointing to upper-right corner. What is its water image?
Solution:
- Water reflection flips vertically (top ↔ bottom)
- Upper-right becomes lower-right
- The arrow will point to lower-right corner
- Left-right orientation stays the same
Answer: Arrow pointing to lower-right corner
Example 3: Paper Folding
Question: A square paper is folded in half vertically, then folded in half horizontally. A single hole is punched in the center of the folded paper. How many holes appear when fully unfolded?
Solution:
- Number of folds = 2
- Holes punched = 1
- Total holes = 1 × 2² = 1 × 4 = 4 holes
- The holes will be symmetrically placed—one in each quadrant of the paper
Answer: 4 holes arranged symmetrically
Common Mistakes
- Confusing mirror and water image → Remember: Mirror = left-right flip (like looking in a dressing mirror), Water = up-down flip (like reflection in a pond). Associate "mirror" with standing beside it, "water" with looking down at it.
- Forgetting that symmetric letters don't change → Before analyzing the whole word/figure, identify symmetric elements first. This eliminates wrong options quickly.
- Reversing the wrong axis in paper folding → Track the fold direction carefully. Vertical fold means holes multiply horizontally when unfolded; horizontal fold means holes multiply vertically.
- Not reversing the sequence in mirror images → For words/numbers, the entire sequence reverses AND each character flips. Students often do only one transformation.
- Applying mirror rules to water image questions → Read the question stem carefully. "Reflection in water" or "image below" indicates water image, not mirror image.
Quick Reference
- Mirror image: Flip left-right, sequence reverses, asymmetric letters reverse.
- Water image: Flip top-bottom, sequence stays same, vertical elements invert.
- Paper folding holes: Holes = punched holes × 2^(number of folds).
- Symmetric letters (mirror): A, H, I, M, O, T, U, V, W, X, Y stay unchanged.
- Clock mirror shortcut: Subtract given time from 11:60 (or 12:00 if minutes are 00).
- When confused: Physically use a small mirror or fold paper during practice to build intuition.
