Sangam Literature represents the oldest surviving body of Tamil literature, composed between approximately 300 BCE and 300 CE during what is called the Sangam Age. The term "Sangam" refers to the literary academies (gatherings of poets and scholars) traditionally believed to have been held in Madurai under Pandya royal patronage. This corpus forms the foundation of classical Tamil literary tradition and provides invaluable insights into ancient Tamil society, culture, economy, and governance.
Key ideas
- Three Sangams: Tradition speaks of three literary academies — First Sangam at Then Madurai (submerged), Second Sangam at Kapatapuram, and Third Sangam at present Madurai. Only Third Sangam works survive today.
- Aham and Puram Classification: All Sangam poetry divides into Aham (inner/love themes dealing with personal emotions) and Puram (outer/heroic themes dealing with war, valor, death, and public life).
- Tinai Concept: Five landscape-mood associations (Kurinji-mountains/union, Mullai-forest/waiting, Marutham-farmland/quarrel, Neithal-seashore/pining, Palai-desert/separation) structure Aham poetry.
- Tholkappiyam's Primacy: Authored by Tholkappiyar (disciple of Agastya), it predates all surviving Sangam poetry and serves as the grammatical and literary framework for the entire corpus.
- Ettuthogai and Pathupattu: The Sangam corpus organizes into eight anthologies (Ettuthogai) of shorter poems and ten idylls (Pathupattu) of longer poems.
Watch out for
- Confusing Ettuthogai count: Students remember "Ettu" means eight but mix up which eight works. → Fix: Memorize the mnemonic "Na-Ku-Ai-Pa-Pa-Ka-Aha-Pura" (Narrinai, Kurunthogai, Aingurunuru, Pathitruppathu, Paripatal, Kalithogai, Ahananooru, Purananooru).
- Mixing Pathinen Keezhkanakku with Sangam works: Thirukkural is often wrongly placed in Sangam period. → Fix: Thirukkural belongs to post-Sangam ethical literature (Pathinen Keezhkanakku), not Ettuthogai or Pathupattu.
- Assuming Tholkappiyam is poetry: Students treat it as Sangam poetry. → Fix: Tholkappiyam is a grammar treatise (Ilakkanam), not poetry (Ilakkiyam). It provides rules for Sangam literature.
