TNPSC Group IV · Bite-size lessons
Geography
About 5 min · General Studies (SSLC standard) · English
Time worked out from the lesson's 297 words at 150 words a minute, plus a minute for each question.
The syllabus is pegged at SSLC standard, meaning questions test fundamental concepts rather than deep analysis.
Key ideas
- Solar System Structure: Sun at centre, eight planets (Mercury to Neptune), Earth is the 5th largest planet and 3rd from the Sun. Moon is Earth's only natural satellite.
- Latitude and Longitude: Latitudes are horizontal lines measuring north-south position (0° at Equator, 90° at poles). Longitudes are vertical lines measuring east-west position (0° at Prime Meridian, 180° at International Date Line). India lies between 8°4'N to 37°6'N latitude and 68°7'E to 97°25'E longitude.
- Earth's Movements: Rotation (24 hours, causes day-night) and Revolution (365¼ days, causes seasons). Earth's axis is tilted at 23½°.
- Atmosphere Layers: Troposphere (weather occurs here), Stratosphere (contains ozone layer), Mesosphere, Thermosphere, Exosphere — in order from Earth's surface.
- India's Physical Divisions: Himalayas (north), Northern Plains (Indo-Gangetic), Peninsular Plateau (Deccan), Coastal Plains (Eastern and Western), Islands (Andaman-Nicobar, Lakshadweep).
Watch out for
- Confusing Himalayan and Peninsular rivers: Students assume all major rivers are perennial. Correction: Only Himalayan rivers (Ganga, Brahmaputra) are perennial; Peninsular rivers (Godavari, Krishna, Cauvery) depend on monsoon.
- Mixing up Western and Eastern Ghats: The Western Ghats are continuous and taller; the Eastern Ghats are discontinuous and lower. Correction: Remember "W = Wall" — Western Ghats form a continuous wall blocking monsoon.
- Forgetting westward-flowing rivers: Correction: Memorise — "Narmada-Tapti go West to Arabian Sea."
Quick reference
- India's location: 8°4'N–37°6'N latitude; 68°7'E–97°25'E longitude
- Standard Meridian: 82°30'E — IST = GMT + 5:30
- Westward rivers: Narmada, Tapti → Arabian Sea
- TN's rainfall: North-East Monsoon (Oct–Dec) — primary source
- TN districts: 38 (remember Mayiladuthurai — 2020)
