Visual Reasoning
About 6 min · Aptitude and Mental Ability · English
Time worked out from the lesson's 444 words at 150 words a minute, plus a minute for each question.
Visual Reasoning tests your ability to mentally manipulate images, recognize patterns, and visualize spatial transformations.
Key ideas
- Mirror Image (Lateral Inversion): The reflection appears as if a mirror is placed to the right or left of the object. Left-right positions swap, but top-bottom remains unchanged. Think of how your reflection shows your right hand on the left side.
- Water Image (Vertical Inversion): The reflection appears as if the object is placed above a water surface. Top-bottom positions swap, but left-right remains unchanged. Imagine the object flipping upside down.
- Paper Folding: A paper is folded one or more times, holes are punched, then unfolded. Each fold doubles the holes symmetrically about the fold line when opened.
- Paper Cutting: Similar to folding but involves cutting shapes from folded paper. The cut pattern replicates across all layers created by folds.
- Embedded Figures: A simple figure (question figure) is hidden within a complex design (answer figure). The hidden figure maintains exact shape, size, and proportions—only its orientation or position may vary.
Watch out for
- Confusing mirror and water images → Remember: Mirror = left-right swap (vertical mirror line), Water = top-bottom swap (horizontal water line). Use the mnemonic "Mirror is beside you, Water is below you."
- Forgetting fold direction in paper folding → Always track which way the paper folds. Draw small arrows showing fold direction. Holes unfold in the opposite direction.
- Counting folds incorrectly → With n folds, you get 2ⁿ layers. Two folds = 4 holes from one punch, not 2. Draw the folding sequence if confused.
Quick reference
- Mirror Image: Flip left-right; vertical axis of symmetry
- Water Image: Flip top-bottom; horizontal axis of symmetry
- Paper Folding: n folds = 2ⁿ holes; unfold symmetrically about fold line
- Embedded Figure: Same shape, same size, may be rotated, never distorted
- Symmetrical letters in mirror: A, H, I, M, O, T, U, V, W, X, Y
Check yourself: 3 questions
1. If the mirror is placed vertically to the right of the word 'POLICE', what will be the mirror image? P O L I C E
2. A square sheet of paper is folded once vertically (left edge to right edge) and then once horizontally (top edge to bottom edge). A circular hole is punched in the bottom-right corner of the folded paper. When the paper is completely unfolded, how many holes will appear?
3. In the water reflection (water image) of the word 'CHENNAI', which letter(s) will look identical to their original form? C H E N N A I
