Syllogism —
Overview
यह दो दिए गए statements से logical conclusions निकालने की आपकी क्षमता को test करता है, categorical quantifiers का उपयोग करते हुए: "All," "Some," और "No।"
Exam में आप categories के बारे में दो statements देखेंगे (उदा., "All cats are animals," "Some animals are dogs") जिसके बाद दो से चार conclusions होंगे। एक statement यह कह सकता है "All pens are chairs"—reality में荒absurd, लेकिन आपको इसे problem के भीतर true के रूप में स्वीकार करना चाहिए।
Key Concepts
- Categorical statements: Syllogism चार प्रकार use करता है—Universal Affirmative (All A are B), Universal Negative (No A are B), Particular Affirmative (Some A are B), और Particular Negative (Some A are not B)।
"All A are B" का अर्थ है circle A पूरी तरह B के अंदर है। "No A are B" का अर्थ है circles A और B touch नहीं करते। "Some A are B" का अर्थ है circles partially overlap करते हैं।
- Complementary pairs: "All" और "Some not" complements हैं; "No" और "Some" complements हैं। यदि "All dogs are animals" false है, तो "Some dogs are not animals" definitely true होना चाहिए।
- Follow from statements, not reality: भले ही एक statement illogical लगे ("All books are trees"), उस problem के लिए इसे true मानें।
- "Some" का अर्थ है कम से कम एक: Logic में, "Some A are B" का मतलब है एक या अधिक A, B में belong करते हैं।
- Either-or cases: जब दो conclusions दोनों true नहीं हो सकते लेकिन एक true होना चाहिए, तो answer है "Either conclusion I or II follows।" यह complementary statements जैसे "Some A are B" और "Some A are not B" के साथ होता है जब केवल partial overlap possible हो।
Formulas / Key Facts
1. All A are B — A, B का एक subset है; circle A circle B के अंदर है। 2. No A are B — A और B disjoint हैं; circles A और B overlap नहीं करते। 3. Some A are B — कम से कम एक A, B में है; circles A और B overlap करते हैं। 4. Some A are not B — कम से कम एक A, B के बाहर है; circle A का एक हिस्सा B के बाहर है। 5. "All A are B" का Converse — "All B are A" को imply नहीं करता। केवल "Some B are A" follow करता है। 6. "No A are B" से — Automatically, "No B are A" भी follow करता है (conversion rule)। 7. "Some A are B" से — Automatically, "Some B are A" भी follow करता है (conversion rule)। 8.
Worked Examples
Example 1: Standard All-Some case
*Statements:* I. All mangoes are fruits. II. Some fruits are sweet.
*Conclusions:* I. Some mangoes are sweet. II. All sweet things are mangoes.
इसलिए conclusion I definitively follow नहीं करता। Conclusion II ("All sweet things are mangoes") absurd Answer: Neither conclusion follows.
---
Example 2: Either-or case
*Statements:* I. Some books are novels. II. All novels are stories.
*Conclusions:* I. Some stories are books. II. No story is a book.
*Solution:* Statement II से, "Novels" circle "Stories" circle के अंदर है। Statement I से, "Books" "Novels" को overlap करता है। Conclusion I ("Some stories are books") definitely follow करता है। Conclusion II ("No story is a book") Answer: Only conclusion I follows.
---
Example 3: Complementary either-or
*Statements:* I. Some trains are buses. II. No bus is a car.
*Conclusions:* I. Some trains are cars. II. Some trains are not cars.
Answer: Either conclusion I or II follows.

Common Mistakes
- Real-world logic का उपयोग करना: छात्र "All chairs are dogs" को absurd मानते हैं और इसे draw करने से refuse करते हैं।
- "Some" को "not all" मानना: रोजमर्रा की भाषा में, "some" अक्सर "not all" को imply करता है। Formal logic में, "Some A are B" इस possibility को allow करता है कि सभी A, B हैं।
हर "All/No/Some" statement का एक सही Venn representation है।
- Converse को confuse करना: "All A are B" का मतलब "All B are A" नहीं है। यदि statements कहते हैं "All roses are flowers," आप conclude नहीं कर सकते "All flowers are roses," लेकिन आप conclude कर सकते हैं "Some flowers are roses।"
- Either-or rule को गलत apply करना: Either-or use करें केवल जब दो conclusions exact complements हों (उदा., "Some A are B" vs. "Some A are not B") और statements दोनों possibilities को open छोड़ें।
Quick Reference
- All A → B: A circle
- No A ↔ B: A
- Some A ∩ B: A और B circles partially overlap करते हैं।
- "All A are B" ⇒ "Some B are A" (लेकिन "All B are A" नहीं)।
- "No A are B" ⇔ "No B are A" (symmetric)।
- Either-or = दोनों conclusions complementary + दोनों possible।
