Blood Relations
About 6 min · Reasoning Ability · English
Time worked out from the lesson's 312 words at 150 words a minute, plus a minute for each question.
The questions test your ability to decode family relationships from verbal descriptions or coded statements. Mastering this topic requires understanding standard relationship terms and building quick mental family trees.
Key ideas
- Generation Levels: Family members exist at different generations. Parents are one level above you (+1), grandparents two levels up (+2), children one level below (−1), and so on. Siblings are at the same level (0).
- Two Family Sides: Maternal relations come through mother's side; paternal relations come through father's side. Uncle can mean father's brother (paternal) or mother's brother (maternal)—context determines which.
- The Pointing Trap: "A pointing to B says..." questions may ask the relationship of B to A or of A to B. Read the final question carefully.
- Only Child / Single Parent Clues: Statements like "X is the only son" or "Y has no siblings" eliminate possibilities and simplify the tree.
- In-Laws: Spouse relationships create in-laws. Your spouse's father is your father-in-law; your brother's wife is your sister-in-law.
Quick reference
- Draw the tree vertically: grandparents on top, grandchildren at bottom
- Use symbols: □ for male, ○ for female, — for marriage, | for parent-child
- "Only son/daughter" eliminates siblings on that side
- In pointing questions: check whether the question asks the pointed person's relation to the speaker or the speaker's relation to that person
- Spouse's parent = your in-law; sibling's spouse = your in-law
