Time worked out from the lesson's 677 words at 150 words a minute, plus a minute for each question.
The passages are moderate in length and cover themes like banking, economy, social issues, technology, or general awareness topics. Unlike PO-level exams, Clerk RC passages are straightforward with less complex vocabulary and sentence structures.
Key ideas
- Passage-first vs Question-first approach: For Clerk-level RC, read the passage once carefully before attempting questions. The passages are short enough that pre-reading questions wastes time.
- Question types fall into clear categories: Direct/factual questions ask "what did the passage say," inference questions ask "what can we conclude," and vocabulary questions test word meanings in context.
- The answer is always in the passage: Never bring outside knowledge. Even if you know something different about the topic, stick strictly to what the passage states.
- Tone and purpose matter: Identify whether the author is positive, negative, neutral, critical, or appreciative. This helps answer main idea and inference questions.
- Elimination is your best friend: In vocabulary and inference questions, eliminate options that contradict the passage or go beyond its scope.
Watch out for
- Choosing answers based on general knowledge → Always verify the answer exists in the passage text. Your real-world knowledge is irrelevant.
- Selecting "partially correct" options → An answer that is 80% correct but 20% wrong is still wrong. Every part of the correct option must match the passage.
- Confusing "inference" with "imagination" → Inference means logical conclusion from given facts, not creative guessing. If you need to assume something major, the option is likely wrong.
Quick reference
- Read passage first, questions second—Clerk passages are short enough for this approach.
- Direct questions: Locate keywords, lift the answer from the passage.
- Inference questions: Stay one small step beyond the text, never two.
- Vocabulary: Context beats dictionary meaning—always re-read the sentence.
- Eliminate options that use extreme words like "always," "never," "only," "all" unless the passage uses them.
