How to prepare (with or without coaching)
The self-study path is entirely viable for OTET — thousands clear it every year without coaching. Here's your roadmap:
### Without coaching (the Shishya-powered route)
Start with Shishya's free resources as your foundation. Access previous year questions (PYQs) for all five sections to understand the exact question patterns. OTET repeats conceptual patterns heavily, so PYQs are gold. Use Shishya's free mock tests religiously — they're calibrated to OTET's difficulty and help you build exam temperament.
For Child Development and Pedagogy (CDP), download NCERT books on Learning and Teaching (available free on ncert.nic.in). Focus on theorists like Piaget, Vygotsky, Kohlberg; understanding learning principles; continuous evaluation methods; and inclusive education. Shishya's notes condense these topics efficiently. Make flashcards for theorists and their contributions — this section is highly repetitive across years.
Language I (Odia/Hindi/Telugu/Bengali/Urdu) tests comprehension and pedagogy. Read newspapers in your chosen language daily for 20 minutes. For pedagogy, understand how children acquire language, multilingualism benefits, and teaching methods. Practice unseen passages from Class 6-8 textbooks. Shishya's language mock sections give you adequate practice.
Language II (English) follows similar patterns — comprehension, grammar, and pedagogy. Standard grammar books like Wren & Martin basics suffice, but focus more on answering Shishya's practice questions. Read one editorial weekly from The Hindu or Indian Express to strengthen comprehension speed.
Mathematics preparation differs for Paper I and II. For Paper I (Classes I-V level), master NCERT Class 3-5 math textbooks — number systems, basic operations, geometry, measurement, patterns, data handling. For Paper II (Classes VI-VIII), work through NCERT Class 6-8 books focusing on algebra, ratio-proportion, percentages, geometry theorems, mensuration. Practice 10 questions daily from each topic. The pedagogy portion requires understanding how children learn math, common errors, and activity-based learning.
Environmental Studies (Paper I) is entirely NCERT Class 3-5 EVS-based. Read the textbooks completely — family, food, water, shelter, travel, maps. The pedagogy here focuses on integrated learning and experiential activities. Make mind maps connecting topics (water connects to health, agriculture, geography).
Science and Social Science (Paper II) cover NCERT Class 6-8 syllabi. For Science: physics (motion, force, light, electricity), chemistry (matter, acids-bases, materials), biology (living organisms, reproduction, health). For Social Science: history (ancient to modern India), geography (resources, climate, maps), civics (governance, constitution), economics (basic concepts). Focus 60% time on content, 40% on pedagogy for each.
