Self-study is absolutely viable for NSEP — in fact, many top performers are self-taught students who leverage the right resources intelligently. Here's your roadmap:
Foundation building (Critical first step) Start with NCERT Physics Class 11 and 12. Read every line, solve every example, and most importantly, understand the derivations. NSEP doesn't just test formula recall; it tests conceptual depth. Once NCERT is solid, move to HC Verma's "Concepts of Physics" Vol 1 & 2. This is non-negotiable — solve at least 60-70% of problems in each chapter.
Free resources that actually work
- Shishya's free NSEP mock tests: These simulate actual exam pressure and difficulty. Take them seriously, under timed conditions. Review every mistake.
- Shishya's PYQs (Previous Year Questions): Gold mine. NSEP repeats *concepts*, not questions. Solve last 10 years minimum. Identify patterns in topics (rotational motion, waves, optics, modern physics appear heavily).

Coaching vs Self-study reality check Coaching provides structure and peer pressure, but it's not essential. What matters: *consistency, problem-solving volume, and honest self-assessment*. If you're disciplined, save the money. If you tend to procrastinate, even a mid-tier coaching's timeline can help — but the actual learning happens when you sit alone with problems.
The problem-solving muscle NSEP rewards speed + accuracy + concept application. You need to solve 500+ quality problems minimum. Sources: HC Verma exercises, Irodov (select easier problems), DC Pandey (for variety), and most critically, PYQs from NSEP, INPhO, and even JEE Advanced (for similar difficulty level).
Theory depth required You must understand *why* formulas work, not just *what* they are. For instance, don't just memorize capacitance formulas — understand electric field behavior, energy storage mechanisms, and how geometry affects capacitance. NSEP loves twisting standard scenarios.
Practical approach for experiments/concepts While NSEP is theoretical, understanding experimental setups (vernier caliper logic, meter bridge, spectrometer principles) strengthens conceptual clarity. Read the practical sections of NCERT carefully.
