NID DAT paper analysis — what actually got asked

Objective section (~70%)

25/100 marks avg

  • Visual perception + visual analogies + observation

    ~25 marks(25%)

Objective section

35/100 marks avg

  • Design awareness + general knowledge (history of design, famous designers, design movements)

    ~20 marks(20%)

  • Numerical aptitude + logical reasoning

    ~15 marks(15%)

Subjective section (~30%)

30/100 marks avg

  • Drawing / sketching / spatial reasoning / scenario response

    ~30 marks(30%)

Takeaways for prep planning

  • Design awareness is the most-overlooked section. Building familiarity with Bauhaus, Indian designers (Charles Correa, Satyajit Ray as a typographer), and global design movements pays off disproportionately.
  • Subjective section needs daily 30-min sketching habit. Don't try to perfect technique in 1 week.
  • Mains studio test is where 70% of final selection happens — Prelims is a filter, Mains is a competition.
