NATA is extremely doable without coaching if you're disciplined. The exam has two parts: Mathematics (Part 1, objective, 40 marks) and Drawing (Part 2, subjective, 160 marks). Most students panic about drawing, but it's 80% practice and 20% talent.

Buy a basic A4 sketchbook, pencils (2B, 4B, 6B), eraser, ruler, and colored pencils/sketch pens. Practice drawing everyday objects from observation — bottles, furniture, buildings, hands. Month 5: Intensive practice

  • Math (45 min/day): Rapid revision of all formulas. Solve 50 MCQs daily from mixed PYQs. Identify weak areas and drill them.
  • Drawing (2.5 hours/day): Full Part 2 practice papers. Complete 2–3 drawing sheets weekly under timed conditions (90 minutes for full section). Focus on quick sketching, clean shading, proper perspective. Practice digital drawing exclusively now.
  • Weekends: Two full Shishya mocks. Analyze time management.

Month 6: Final sprint

  • Math (30 min/day): Formula revision, previous errors review. No new topics.
  • Drawing (2 hours/day): Polish signature style. Practice 5 most common question types: (1) sketch an object, (2) draw in perspective, (3) improve given design, (4) create a composition, (5) texture/pattern drawing. Ensure digital fluency.
  • Every 3 days: One complete Shishya mock. Simulate exam day conditions — same time, no breaks.
  • Last week: Light revision only. Trust your preparation. Sleep well.

Daily non-negotiables (all months):

  • Carry a pocket sketchbook — draw during commute, waiting times

Is it tough? An honest take for an average student

Difficulty: 6/10 (Moderate, manageable with consistent practice)

NATA is NOT conceptually brutal like JEE or NEET. An average student with decent Class 12 math and willingness to practice drawing can crack it comfortably. The exam is designed to test aptitude, not mastery — they want to see if you have the basic visual and mathematical thinking for architecture.

Math (40 marks): If you've cleared Class 12 board exams decently, you already know 90% of what's tested. Questions are NCERT-level or slightly above. The challenge is speed — 40 questions in ~50 minutes (leave time for drawing). With practice, this becomes easy. Most students score 28–35/40 here.

Drawing (160 marks): This scares people, but here's the truth — you don't need to be Leonardo da Vinci. NATA doesn't expect museum-quality art. They're checking if you can: (a) visualize 3D objects and draw them correctly, (b) observe details, (c) compose aesthetically pleasing layouts, (d) understand basic design. Cutoffs: Most decent architecture colleges accept 100–120/200 (~50–60%). Top NITs/SPA might need 140+. So even if you're average, consistent 6-month prep gets you into good colleges. This isn't an exam where only the top 1% succeed.
