Alphabet Test
Overview
Alphabet Test is a fundamental reasoning topic in IBPS Clerk Prelims that tests your familiarity with the English alphabet's structure. Questions typically ask you to find letter positions, form words from given letters, identify letter pairs, or rearrange letters according to specific rules.
The key to mastering Alphabet Test lies in knowing letter positions both forward (A=1, B=2...) and backward (Z=1, Y=2...), and being able to quickly manipulate letter sequences. Unlike puzzles or seating arrangements that require extensive working, these questions can be solved in 30-60 seconds each with proper preparation. Students who skip this topic thinking it's "too basic" often lose easy marks.
Key Concepts
- Forward Position: A=1, B=2, C=3... Z=26. Memorize the positions of key letters: E=5, J=10, O=15, T=20, Y=25.
- Backward Position (EJOTY reverse): Z=1, Y=2, X=3... A=26. The formula is: Backward position = 27 - Forward position.
- Opposite Letters: Letters equidistant from both ends form pairs summing to 27. A-Z, B-Y, C-X, D-W, E-V, F-U, G-T, H-S, I-R, J-Q, K-P, L-O, M-N.
- Left-Right Convention: "Left of" means toward A; "Right of" means toward Z. In the sequence A-B-C-D, B is to the left of D.
- Meaningful Word Formation: Rearranging given letters (usually 4-6) to form valid English words, then answering based on specific positions.
- Letter Series/Patterns: Identifying the logic in letter sequences—skipping letters, alternating directions, or combining with numbers.
- Middle Letter Identification: For odd-numbered letter groups, the middle letter is at position (n+1)/2 from either end.
Formulas / Key Facts
Position Formula
- Forward position of any letter = Count from A
- Backward position = 27 - Forward position
- Example: M = 13 forward, 27-13 = 14 backward
EJOTY Rule (Memorize This)
| Letter | Position |
|---|---|
| E | 5 |
| J | 10 |
| O | 15 |
| T | 20 |
| Y | 25 |
Quick Position Calculation
- For H: J=10, H is 2 before J, so H=8
- For R: T=20, R is 2 before T, so R=18
- For L: J=10, L is 2 after J, so L=12
Opposite Letter Pairs (Sum = 27) A-Z, B-Y, C-X, D-W, E-V, F-U, G-T, H-S, I-R, J-Q, K-P, L-O, M-N
Number of Letters Between Two Positions
- Letters between X and Y = |Position of Y - Position of X| - 1
- Example: Letters between C(3) and H(8) = 8-3-1 = 4 letters
Worked Examples
Example 1: Position-Based Question Which letter is 7th to the right of the 12th letter from the left end of the alphabet?
Step 1: 12th letter from left = L Step 2: 7th to the right of L = L + 7 positions = 12 + 7 = 19th position = S Answer: S
Example 2: Word Formation If the letters of the word ROCKET are arranged in alphabetical order, which letter will be third from the right?
Step 1: Letters in ROCKET: R, O, C, K, E, T Step 2: Alphabetical order: C, E, K, O, R, T Step 3: Third from right: Count from T backward: T(1), R(2), O(3) Answer: O
Example 3: Meaningful Word How many meaningful English words can be formed using the 1st, 3rd, 7th, and 8th letters of the word HOMELAND, using each letter only once?
Step 1: HOMELAND: H(1), M(3), A(7), N(8) → Letters are H, M, A, N Step 2: Possible combinations forming words: MANA (no, 2 A's needed), HMAN (no)... Step 3: No meaningful 4-letter word possible with H, M, A, N Answer: None
Example 4: Letter Pairs How many pairs of letters are there in the word THUNDER which have as many letters between them in the word as in the alphabet?
Step 1: THUNDER positions in word: T(1), H(2), U(3), N(4), D(5), E(6), R(7) Step 2: Check each pair:
- T-H: Word gap=0, Alphabet gap (T=20, H=8)=11 → No
- H-N: Word gap=1, Alphabet (H=8, N=14)=5 → No
- U-R: Word gap=3, Alphabet (U=21, R=18)=2 → No
- N-R: Word gap=2, Alphabet (N=14, R=18)=3 → No
- D-E: Word gap=0, Alphabet (D=4, E=5)=0 → Yes!
- Continue checking all pairs... Answer: 1 (D-E)
Common Mistakes
- Confusing "from left" and "to the left": "5th from left" means the 5th position counting from A. "5th to the left of X" means moving 5 steps toward A from X. → Always identify whether you're finding a position or moving from a position.
- Miscounting in combined operations: Questions like "7th to the right of 11th from left" need two steps. Students often add/subtract incorrectly. → First find the base letter, write it down, then calculate the shift separately.
- Forgetting that "between" excludes endpoints: Letters between C and G are D, E, F (3 letters), not C, D, E, F, G (5 letters). → "Between" means excluding both endpoints; use formula: difference - 1.
- Alphabetical order confusion in word formation: Students arrange letters of EXAMPLE as A, E, E, L, M, P, X but forget that E appears twice. → Write each letter separately, including duplicates, then arrange.
- Left-right reversal in backward counting: When counting from the right end, students sometimes still move rightward. → From right means Z is position 1 and you count toward A.
Quick Reference
- EJOTY: E=5, J=10, O=15, T=20, Y=25 — your anchor points for all position questions.
- Opposite pairs sum to 27: A+Z=27, B+Y=27... useful for "letter opposite to X" questions.
- Right = toward Z, Left = toward A: Never confuse directional movement.
- Letters between X and Y = |Y-X| - 1: Quick formula for counting gaps.
- For backward position: Simply calculate 27 minus the forward position.
- Word formation tip: Write letters in a row, cross out as you form words, check dictionary validity mentally.
