Time worked out from the lesson's 796 words at 150 words a minute, plus a minute for each question.
Unlike PO-level passages, Clerk passages are shorter, use simpler vocabulary, and focus on straightforward factual recall rather than inference-heavy analysis.
Key ideas
- Passage Types: Factual/informational passages dominate (banking schemes, social welfare, environmental issues). Occasional narrative or opinion-based passages appear but are rare.
- Direct vs. Inference Questions: Clerk Prelims heavily favors direct questions where the answer is stated explicitly in the passage. Inference questions (requiring you to conclude something unstated) are fewer and simpler than in PO.
- Question Categories: Expect five main types—main idea/title, detail-based (fact retrieval), vocabulary (synonym/antonym in context), tone/attitude of author, and true/false statements.
- Contextual Vocabulary: Word-meaning questions ask for the meaning as used in the passage, not the dictionary definition. A word like "check" might mean "verify" in one passage and "stop" in another.
- Elimination Strategy: Options are often designed with one clearly wrong, two partially correct, and one fully correct answer. Eliminating the obviously wrong choices first saves time.
Watch out for
- Answering from general knowledge instead of the passage → Always verify your answer exists in the passage text. Even if you know a fact externally, the correct answer must match what the passage says.
- Choosing a partially correct option → Read all four options completely. Partially true statements that add extra information not in the passage are traps. The correct option matches the passage exactly.
- Spending too long on one question → If you cannot locate the answer within 60 seconds, mark it for review and move on. One difficult question should not cost you three easier ones.
Quick reference
- Read questions first, then scan passage for keywords.
- "According to the passage" = answer is directly stated, do not infer.
- Vocabulary questions: meaning as used in that sentence, not general meaning.
- Eliminate extreme options (always, never, completely) unless passage supports them.
- Time limit: maximum 10 minutes per RC set—move on if stuck.

1. Read the passage and answer the question that follows. Microfinance has emerged as a powerful tool for poverty alleviation in India. By providing small loans to individuals who lack access to traditional banking services, microfinance institutions enable poor people to start small businesses and generate income. The Grameen Bank model, which originated in Bangladesh, has been replicated across India with considerable success. Women constitute the majority of microfinance borrowers, and studies show that when women control household income, there is a greater improvement in family nutrition, health, and education. However, critics argue that high interest rates charged by some microfinance institutions can trap borrowers in a cycle of debt. What is the main purpose of microfinance according to the passage?
2. Read the passage and answer the question that follows. Urban heat islands are metropolitan areas that are significantly warmer than their surrounding rural areas. This temperature difference is primarily caused by human activities and modifications to the landscape. Buildings, roads, and other infrastructure absorb and retain heat more than natural landscapes like forests and water bodies. During the day, these structures absorb solar radiation, and at night, they release the stored heat, keeping urban areas warmer. The lack of vegetation in cities also contributes to the problem, as plants naturally cool the air through evapotranspiration. Cities can mitigate heat island effects by planting more trees, installing green roofs, using reflective building materials, and increasing the number of parks and water bodies. According to the passage, why do urban areas remain warmer at night?
3. Read the passage and answer the question that follows. The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has consistently achieved remarkable milestones with limited resources. While space agencies in developed countries operate with budgets running into billions of dollars, ISRO has demonstrated that cost-effective space exploration is possible through innovation and efficient resource management. The Mars Orbiter Mission, launched in 2013, cost India only 74 million dollars, which was less than the budget of the Hollywood film Gravity. This mission made India the first Asian nation to reach Martian orbit and the first nation in the world to do so in its maiden attempt. ISRO's success has inspired developing nations to pursue their own space programs and has positioned India as a major player in the global space industry, particularly in satellite launch services. Which of the following can be inferred from the passage?
