Geography is part of the Social Studies paper in AP TET, covering physical, human and economic geography with special emphasis on India and Andhra Pradesh. This subject tests your understanding of natural phenomena, landforms, climate patterns, resources and map skills — all essential knowledge for teaching classes 6-8.
Key ideas
- Earth in the Solar System: Earth is the third planet from the Sun, tilted at 23.5° on its axis. This tilt causes seasons. Earth's rotation causes day and night; revolution around the Sun causes the annual cycle.
- Latitude and Longitude: Latitudes are horizontal lines measuring distance from the Equator (0° to 90° N/S). Longitudes are vertical lines measuring distance from the Prime Meridian (0° to 180° E/W). India lies between 8°4'N to 37°6'N latitude and 68°7'E to 97°25'E longitude.
- Landforms and Their Formation: Mountains form through folding (Himalayas), faulting (Vindhyas) or volcanic activity. Plateaus are elevated flat lands (Deccan Plateau). Plains form through river deposition (Indo-Gangetic Plain).
- Atmosphere and Climate: The atmosphere has five layers — troposphere (weather), stratosphere (ozone), mesosphere, thermosphere and exosphere. Climate differs from weather: climate is long-term average, weather is day-to-day.
- Hydrosphere and Water Cycle: Water covers 71% of Earth's surface. The water cycle involves evaporation, condensation, precipitation and collection. Only 2.5% of Earth's water is freshwater.
Watch out for
- Confusing weather and climate → Weather is short-term atmospheric condition at a specific place and time; climate is the average weather pattern over 30+ years for a region.
- Mixing up latitude and longitude → Remember: Latitude = Flat (horizontal lines), Longitude = Long (vertical lines running pole to pole).
- Stating Ganga as India's longest river → Ganga is the longest river within India, but if considering total length, the Indus (originates in Tibet) is longer. For peninsular India, Godavari is longest.
Quick reference
- Latitude of India: 8°4'N to 37°6'N — India lies entirely in the Northern Hemisphere
- Standard Meridian: 82°30'E (IST is UTC + 5:30)
- Three physical divisions of India: Himalayas (north), Indo-Gangetic Plain (middle), Peninsular Plateau (south)
- AP's three regions: Coastal Andhra, Rayalaseema, parts of Eastern Ghats
- Map scale formula: Map distance × Scale = Actual distance
