Life processes are the essential biological functions that distinguish living organisms from non-living matter. For AP TET Paper I, this topic is part of Environmental Studies, testing both your content knowledge and your ability to teach these concepts to primary-level students (Classes 1-5). The syllabus covers five fundamental processes: nutrition, respiration, transportation, excretion, and reproduction.
Key ideas
- Life processes are criteria for life: Any organism that performs nutrition, respiration, transportation, excretion, and reproduction is considered alive. These processes maintain the body and ensure species survival.
- Nutrition is food acquisition and use: Organisms obtain and convert food into energy and building materials. Autotrophs (plants) make their own food; heterotrophs (animals, fungi) depend on others.
- Respiration releases energy from food: It is NOT just breathing. Cellular respiration breaks down glucose to release energy, occurring in all living cells continuously.
- Transportation moves materials within the body: In animals, blood carries oxygen, nutrients, and wastes. In plants, xylem carries water upward; phloem carries food to all parts.
- Excretion removes metabolic wastes: Waste products like carbon dioxide, urea, and excess water must be expelled to prevent poisoning of cells.
Watch out for
- Confusing breathing with respiration → Breathing is just inhaling/exhaling air; respiration is the cellular process of releasing energy from food. Respiration happens in every cell, not just lungs.
- Thinking plants don't respire → Plants respire continuously. During the day, photosynthesis masks respiration because it produces more oxygen than respiration consumes.
- Mixing up xylem and phloem → Remember: Xylem carries water (both have 'y'... actually, use "X = eXit from roots" for upward; Phloem = Food).
Quick reference
- Five life processes: Nutrition, Respiration, Transportation, Excretion, Reproduction
- Autotrophs make food; Heterotrophs take food
- Respiration = Energy release (in all cells, all the time)
- Xylem = Water up; Phloem = Food around
- Kidneys filter blood → Urine; Lungs remove CO2; Skin removes sweat
