State-level equivalent of IAS. Easier entry; service confined to one state.

What they actually do

PCS officers (UP PCS, MPPSC, BPSC, TNPSC etc.) run state-level + district administration similar to IAS but at state cadre. Promotional ceiling is typically Divisional Commissioner / Principal Secretary level.

  • Court appearances (revenue tribunals)
  • Coordination with elected reps + IAS officers

How to become a State Civil Services (PCS)

1 viable paths.

  • Bachelor's → State PSC → PCS

    Each state has its own commission and exam pattern. UP PCS, BPSC, TNPSC, KPSC, MPPSC, RPSC etc.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Age 21-40 (state-specific)
  • Domicile of the state (some states only)

Skills that matter

  • State-specific GS (history, geography, polity, current affairs)
  • Regional language fluency (Hindi for UP/MP/BR/RJ etc.)
  • Same admin skill base as IAS

Salary bands by experience

Wide bands — real salary depends on city, employer, performance. Pick the midpoint for planning.
