Hindi Grammar (Vyakaran) forms a substantial portion of the Language I paper in GTET. Questions test your ability to identify, classify and apply grammatical rules across sandhi (letter-joining), samas (compound words), alankar (figures of speech) and chand (metre/prosody). Expect 8–12 direct questions plus grammar-based comprehension items.
Mastery here is mechanical: once you internalise the classification tables and practise recognition, accuracy becomes high. The examiner typically gives a word/phrase and asks you to name the type (e.g., "दीर्घ संधि" or "कर्मधारय समास"). Speed comes from pattern recognition, not derivation, so drill examples repeatedly.

Key Concepts
**Sandhi** = joining of two sounds (वर्णों का मेल). There are three broad types: स्वर (vowel), व्यंजन (consonant) and विसर्ग sandhi. Identification depends on which letters merge.
**Samas** = combining two or more words into one compound; the relationship between the words determines the type. Key question: which word is प्रधान (principal)?
**Alankar** = ornaments of language that beautify expression. Divided into शब्दालंकार (sound-based) and अर्थालंकार (meaning-based).
**Chand** = metrical structure of poetry based on मात्रा (syllable weight) or वर्ण (letter count). GTET focuses on common Hindi metres like दोहा, चौपाई, सोरठा.
**Grammatical essentials** = वर्ण-विचार (phonology), शब्द-विचार (morphology), वाक्य-विचार (syntax), पदभेद (parts of speech) and क्रिया-काल (tense).

Formulas / Key Facts
म् → अनुस्वार or same-class nasal before consonant (e.g., सम् + तोष = संतोष)
### विसर्ग संधि
Visarga (ः) changes to स्, र् or merges with following sound (e.g., निः + रस = नीरस)
**शब्दालंकार (sound-based)**
अनुप्रास — वर्णों की आवृत्ति (चारु चंद्र की चंचल किरणें)
यमक — एक शब्द अनेक बार, भिन्न अर्थ (कनक-कनक ते सौ गुनी…)
श्लेष — एक शब्द, दो अर्थ एक साथ (रहिमन पानी राखिए…)
**अर्थालंकार (meaning-based)**
**Solution:** 1. Vigrah: पाँच वटों का समाहार 2. First word = संख्यावाचक (पंच = पाँच) 3. Answer: **द्विगु समास**
---
### Example 3 — Alankar **Q:** "पीपर पात सरिस मन डोला" — अलंकार पहचानिए।
**Solution:** 1. तुलना है — मन की तुलना पीपल के पत्ते से 2. वाचक शब्द "सरिस" (= जैसा) present 3. उपमान = पीपर पात, उपमेय = मन, वाचक = सरिस, साधारण धर्म = डोलना 4. Answer: **उपमा अलंकार**

Common Mistakes
1. **Confusing गुण and वृद्धि संधि** — Remember: गुण produces ए/ओ ; वृद्धि produces ऐ/औ. Students reverse them. Mnemonic: "वृद्धि = बड़ा" → ऐ/औ are "bigger" diphthongs.
2. **कर्मधारय vs बहुव्रीहि** — Both may look like adjective+noun. Ask: does the compound mean exactly what it says (कर्मधारय) or point to a third entity (बहुव्रीहि)? E.g., नीलकंठ — if it means "blue throat" literally = कर्मधारय; if it means "Shiva" = बहुव्रीहि.
3. **यमक vs श्लेष** — यमक repeats the same word form with different meanings; श्लेष uses one word only once but with two simultaneous meanings. Count word occurrences to distinguish.
4. **Matra miscounting in chand** — Forgetting that a consonant cluster before a vowel still carries the vowel's matra, or ignoring half-letters. Always mark each syllable separately.
5. **Ignoring context in alankar** — उत्प्रेक्षा needs मानो/जनु/जानो; उपमा needs सा/सम/सरिस. Spotting the marker word speeds up identification.
---
Quick Reference
**दीर्घ संधि** = same vowel + same vowel → long vowel (आ + आ = आ).
**तत्पुरुष** = second word प्रधान, hidden कारक (राजा का पुत्र = राजपुत्र).
**उपमा needs four parts**: उपमान, उपमेय, वाचक, साधारण धर्म.
**रूपक** = उपमेय IS उपमान (no "like/as").
**दोहा** = 13-11 मात्रा pattern; **चौपाई** = 16 मात्रा each line.
**अनुप्रास** = consonant repetition for rhythm (छ-छ-छ etc.).
